Hot tapping is also called wet tapping. It is a simple way to tap into a water line while it is under pressure and add an extra line, drain the system or add a sensor or thermo well. Most tapping equipments have adapters with a bleed valve which permits for a pressure test with a hydrostatic pump to ensure that the sleeve or PVC tapping saddles has a good fit and doesn’t leak. How hot tap works You put the PVC tapping saddles or the sleeve on the line and add a valve. Then you have to test the saddle for fit and have to pressure test it with a hydrostatic pump which goes though the bleed valve on the adapter. The tapping equipment has a packing gland which seals at the valve. A plumber can grow his business by adding hot tapping services along with addition of the PVC ball valves. With the addition of a cheap portable device, they can add taps to pipe of any size. This process permits the elimination of system draining and avoiding expensive shutdowns while adding an extra line or drain point when the line is “hot”. This can be very lucrative. How will I know what tapping sleeve is required in my situation? Knowing which tapping sleeve to use can be tough. If you don’t know which product to buy, always consult an expert to get the best product for your application. There are various types of PVC tapping saddles and tapping sleeves from regular ductile iron bodies to complete stainless steel design. Most of these come with a O-ring or SBR gasket for general temperatures such as -20 to 150 degree Fahrenheit. They also come with different types of diameters.
